PLAYWRIGHT

Gracie Rittenberg

The idea of this play came to me very simply: what if Hamlet was a woman and it was her mother who died? I felt like she'd argue and complain a little more, and the complicated push and pull of a mother/daughter relationship felt like it fit with how indecisive and confused Hamlet is. I've always been passionate about using classics to highlight women's stories, and modernizing Hamlet felt like the perfect vessel for that endeavor. Women are called crazy for any reason, especially when they are trying to speak their truth. I wanted to explore relationships where no one is clearly correct, and there is too much baggage to effectively communicate. Working in collaboration with so many female and LGBTQ+ artists on this piece has been a dream come true, and I have loved every second of bringing this play to the stage with Bluebird.
